The openings: Higher Education’s big rethink

Project Type: Research and Analysis, Collaborative Writing
Topics and Themes: Higher Ed Leadership, Social Justice, Learning Design and Transformation

The Challenge Space

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the uncertainty and challenges of the time have generated a set of transformational “openings”:

  • The pivot to remote instruction opened higher education’s eyes to the inequitable circumstances surrounding students and technology.

  • The violent deaths of Black men and women, and subsequent protests, opened an unprecedented conversation about systemic racism and racial justice at colleges and universities everywhere.

  • The consequential emerging demands for educational adaptation, as well as the call for racial justice on campuses, gives higher education new openings for creating and sustaining meaningful change.

The Response

Working collaboratively with Georgetown Learning Design and Technology (LDT) Professors Randy Bass, Bryan Alexander, and LDT classmates, we conducted nearly twenty webinar interviews with leaders across higher education and distilled highlights for preparation of a free digital publication exploring the impact of the unprecedented events of 2020 and the potential for transformation in higher education.

The Artifacts

My research, writing, and engagement in the LDT Big Rethink Authoring group contributed to the creation of a free digital guide exploring strategies and pathways for navigating through unfolding challenges in our higher ed ecosystem, as well as produced a webinar series with prominent higher education leaders, researchers, and innovators exploring interlocking themes of transformation.
